Missing Articles in Discover

In this article you will learn about the different ways in which Online content can be missed from your Discover feed. In Discover, we track and crawl online content based on the media or profile in question.

To begin with, let’s clarify how we gather content from the websites we monitor. When we initiate monitoring a media outlet, the Online and Social coverage team examines the website's structure (via its HTML code) and identifies two key aspects:

  • What are the sections where we will need to retrieve articles
  • Where to find article content, excluding any extra content on the webpage

We then set up what we refer to as a 'filter' in our internal tools. A filter consists of a series of guidelines that our crawlers utilize to navigate the website, accessing each identified section and monitoring all the content available within it. Since numerous articles may appear in multiple sections simultaneously, we implement a deduplication process to ensure each article is recorded only once. After the configuration is complete, we commence the content retrieval process.

Here are some reasons why an online article might be missing:

The media doesn't exists in our database

This means we do not monitor the website, therefore we will not pick up content. In this instance you can report this to the support team and they will submit a request for our Data ops team to add the media to our database for future monitoring.

Alternatively you can report the missing media directly from the platform, and you can manually insert online content by following our manual here for both scenarios.

The article has been deleted by a user

It's possible for users to delete placements, in this case it would be removed from your feed results. Launchmetrics would need to re-add the article.

Restricted access to content via a Purchase or a Paid Subscription

Articles behind a paywall require a subscription to access their full content. This content will sometimes be missed, or we may be able to receive snippets or mentions of these articles in your feeds, you won't be able to read the complete articles without a subscription. This is a common practice among many publishers as they seek to monetise their content. Launchmetrics have partnered with NICKLPass to provide an all-in-one solution for accessing paywalled content from selected media outlets. New sections added to the media

When we first add a media to our database, the team makes sure to add all available sections at the time; but since websites often change and add new sections, we may miss some of these if they are recent additions. Our team is constantly checking our panel and adding new sections when those are available; prioritised based on the online media's fashion, luxury, and beauty relevance. However, due to the high volume of data and the expansive database we manage certain sections may take longer than expected to be detected and added to our coverage.

Please feel free to report the omission to our support team. They will be able to open a ticket to have this new section added as soon as possible.

Change in code or structure of the media

Our system relies on automated processes to detect the keywords in the text of the articles and medias that are part of our panel. Often, a media may change or update their code, when this happens our system needs to be updated on our end to be able to properly "read" the text again. We have several automated fallbacks and solutions to solve this issue as soon as possible when it happens, but sometimes it will require manual adjustment by our team. I've opened a ticket with them to be sure they update our settings as soon as possible. Please don't hesitate to reach out should you ever catch another instance like this. Please note that our team is consistently monitoring this.

Galleries coding structure

All galleries on online websites often have a different format than regular online articles, meaning our team has to do a an individual set-up to monitor each type of slide or gallery. This makes them tricky to monitor which is why many media monitoring services don't offer this functionality. We know that this is a type of content that is very relevant, so our team spends a lot of time updating and managing specific monitoring settings for this content, but sometimes we may need to do an update on our end or add a specific monitoring parameter for gallery content.  I've opened a ticket with our team to be sure they add this new gallery type. Please don't hesitate to reach out should you ever catch another instance like this.

Press / News agency article

Press/news agencies unfortunately do not always publish all the release that they receive and some publications stay in private sections that we can't access. Essentially these articles are "invisible" for our tech; so they can not be retrieved.

Please don't hesitate to reach out should you ever catch an instance like this and we can check internally if there is a way to get the article. Our tech team is always looking for ways to improve our technology so this situation may change over time and from one media to another.

Edited Article

Sometimes the originally published article is published without mentioning a brand and is later edited later on by the media. In these cases we may miss an update. Our team are always working to catch these instances.
